How do I know if my partner had HPV?

I fooled around with a really good guy friend. Several days later, I noticed a wart on the hand I touched his penis with. Does this mean he has an STD or HPV? How do I ask him?

There are more than 100 different types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Some of these viruses cause genital warts, some cause warts in other areas of the body, and some do not cause warts at all. Usually, the warts that appear on a person’s hand are caused by a different type of HPV from the kind that causes genital warts. So what you're seeing on your hand is probably not from fooling around.

Lots of times, people don't know if they (or their partners) have HPV unless they see a wart – and warts aren’t always obvious. Doctors can diagnose warts by examining the skin closely (sometimes with a magnifying glass) and using a special solution to make them easier to see. In girls, a Pap smear and other tests can help diagnose an HPV infection of the cervix.

There's no way to tell just by looking whether someone has an STD, and some people with STDs don't know they have them. So talk to your partner. Start by asking if he's ever worried about STDs and if he's been tested. You both can get tested for STDs at your doctor's office or a local health clinic (like Planned Parenthood) – and, if you're thinking of having sex, ask about birth control.

One final word about STD testing: Although tests check for STDs that carry the most serious health risks, not all tests check for every STD. So if you have any type of sex, use a condom every time.
