If condoms are stored and used properly, they rarely break (there’s a less than 2% chance). But if condoms are exposed to heat, sun, oils, lotions, or chemicals, they can be more likely to break.

What are some of the other reasons condoms break? Expired condoms and condoms that don't fit properly also are more likely to tear. If a condom is put on incorrectly (such as not leaving enough room at the tip), it can break. Condoms also can tear if there is too much friction and not enough lubrication, or if the condom comes into contact with a person's nails, rings, piercings, teeth, or other sharp edges.

Condoms are the only type of birth control that can help prevent both pregnancy and STDs, so it's important to use and store them properly.
