Dear perfectlypetite,

I have the perfect answer!

Become next year's Seventeen Magazine's Freshman 15!  You do exactly what you outlined in your question as one of the Freshman 15.  You become one of 15 girls around the nation chosen to demystify the freshman college experience to younger readers of Seventeen, writing two blogs a week, recording a video log each week, and other fun, adventurous tasks.

You can apply via the Seventeen website, and be sure check out this year's Freshman 15 at www.seventeen.com/freshman15.  If you shine through as one of the Freshman 15 (you're technically listed as a correspondent of Seventeen for nine months, AND get paid!), then it will be definitely a great foot into the door of possibly interning for Seventeen!

Let me know if you have any more questions regarding the application process, or any other questions you may about the experience as paft of the Freshman 15 for Seventeen magazine.  You can reach me at xxxxxxxxxx, or you can friend me on Facebook - Mary Liu - at the University of Florida, to follow-up on my comments!

Best of luck,

x
Mary Liu

Hi! It's Katie from the Seventeen Freshman 15. As someone who has written for both Seventeen and Teen Vogue (I interned there during high school), I hope my advice will help. :)

1. Pitch any ideas for stories you have to editors! I know that Seventeen has open opportunities - they often ask for information through their site!
2. Start small, and work your way up. I got my first internship with a magazine when I was fifteen - I emailed the staff at The Beijinger, a city lifestyle magazine, explained why I wanted to write and intern for them, and interviewed for the position. Although you won't be writing very much (if at all) as an intern, you'll be gaining experience.
3. Network, network, network. At the Beijinger, I met people in the industry. This got me my next internship at Rolling Stone China (a considerably more famous title). I also got interviewed for Women's Wear Daily, which helped me get my internship at Teen Vogue. It's important to keep meeting people in the industry - it'll help you when you want to know which positions are open!
4. Don't worry too much about your college major. While it might be useful to major in a humanities-related subject, it's not required. It's more important to get internships and meet people in the industry.

Hope this helps!

Katie
