Are lip piercings bad for your teeth?

I'm turning 18 very soon, and I've been seriously considering getting a lip piercing as of late. But I've heard from a few people that they can be bad for your teeth. Is this true? I don't want to risk losing my enamel due to a piecing...

Dear Rocker_Staples,

When I was in college, I had my tongue pierced, to my parent's and dentist's dismay. My parents wanted to remove it because they thought it was ugly and weird. My dentist wanted me to remove it because I could chip my teeth.

One day, I was walking to class randomly flicking my tongue ring around in my mouth, when I heard it click against one of my incisors. I didn't think anything of it because it had happened before. Later that day I was inspecting my face in the mirror and then smiled, looking over my teeth. I was horrified! I had actually chipped the corner of my tooth - a very small chip - but a chip nonetheless. Needless to say, the dentist won that argument and out came the tongue ring.
