i like a guy and i flirt with him but i never know if he is flirting or just being friendly.

This guy i like i met this past school year, and i started really talking to him in March. we joke around a lot . I mean i feel like we completely understand each other ! My friend who kinda knows him told him that he should ask me out and he said that he isnt looking for a gf (which is totally fine with me ) and it would be awkward. So my friend asked if he likes me like that.. he said no ( :[ ) And i am wondering...why would it be
awkward if you DONT like me? During the end of the year he payed more attention to me and sat next to me during class. One day this girl did something "mean" to him as a joke and during class (when he was sitting next to me) he said "i forgive you , you can be my best friend again but you have to fight **insert my name here** for it" and i have NO clue if he was seriously call me is best friend !!!! I know i flirt ... but i have no clue when he is .. or isnt ...
