Use a heat protectant spray so your hair doesn't get too damaged.

I clip mine up into different sections so i can straighten the under layers and each piece at a time. If you want your hair to be curled under a bit, pull the straightner towards you as you reach the tips; if you want your hair to be flipped out at the tips pull the straightner away from you.
Don't press it on one section for too long, it can cause a lot of damage.
